This three track sampler comes from the bands forthcoming release, recorded at the last Idiot Prayer (who we all miss, love and want to hang out with again soon, might we add) show in Dunedin earlier this year. Ipswich “vow” you only get a 24 hour window to listen to the three tracks; and they’re pretty adamant about that. Recorded by Iain Sweetman, we’ve heard the full version of the live album and we’ll be honest, it’s going to be a fantastic introductory piece to those none too familiar with the band.

Until then – you got a 24 hour period to “hoon on this”.

Cheese On Toast leaked an hour ago the line up for this year’s Borderline Festival, taking place at Whammy and Wine Cellar on April 5th, 6th and 7th. For the uninitiated, Borderline is put on by Rohan Evans, he of both The Wine Cellar and Whammy fame (and an awesome curator to boot), and in the past has had some eclectic, incredible line ups from emerging artists not just in New Zealand but from all over the world also.

This year we’re stoked that both god bows to math and Cat Venom have both be chosen as part of the festival – this would mark potentially the first time Cat Venom will play with their new live drummer, and would be the last New Zealand show god bows to math play ahead of their 10-date tour of Australia.

Tickets aren’t on sale as of yet, but we’ll have links the moment they do.

*EARLY SHOW: 7pm – 10pm

MUZAI Records are pleased to announce an Auckland show from Brisbane experimental-pop group OLD GROWTH COLA, as part of their 2012 New Zealand Tour.

Old Growth Cola are a Brisbane based pysch pop band who are touring Australia and New Zealand in February of 2012. Accompanying this tour is the release of an untitled 7”, limited to a pressing of 60 copies. The 7” was recorded in November of 2011 and cut to polycarbonate in New Zealand by Peter King. This is Old Growth Cola’s second release since the self release of an EP 2010; it is their first release with the current line up.

Having formed in September of 2010, the band has played shows in Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The current tour will see them adding Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland to that list.

The five piece band is includes Lewis O’Leary, Henry Mills, Marek Rygielski, Andrew Boyd and Adam Nicoll. Their sound has been described as a free approach to experimentation taking place over the top of a simplistic “carpet” of pop songs While instrumentation in the group includes the standard vocals, guitar, bass and drums, live performances also make use of home made electronics as well as mixer feedback, prepared instrumentation and extended vocal techniques.

“Old Growth Cola combine some interesting musical elements – acoustic guitar, bass and drums as per your common-or-garden folk-rock trio, but the quintet instead get in touch with their inner Spacemen 3 through a lead guitarist who doesn’t play so much as he coaxes all manner of deep space skree from his six string, and a chap manning a table of effects pedals and other sonic manipulation gizmos.”

Dear New Zealand,

Just wanted to say a massive, huge thank you for having us! We really had a great time and all the shows were so much fun. Murphy’s Law wasn’t enforced this trip. We didn’t lose baggage, we weren’t charged with excess baggage, we didn’t break a string, no amps blew up, we played to nice people every night, we didn’t go hungry, we didn’t miss flights, we didn’t get rained on. It really was something really special for us.
A huge part of that success was due to MUZAI Records and God Bows To Math for putting up with our constant emails, driving us around, lending gear and just being totally nice guys.

I was a little bummed at the thought of heading back to Shanghai because after meeting so many people in great bands, putting out zines and putting on house parties. A country that is really in to their local music and is really behind it it made me realize that Shanghai doesn’t really have enough of these active, motivated people.

But thinking about it a bit more, it has made me a bit more inspired to do my best, get more bands touring here. I just wrote a zine on the flight home and I’ve asked my girlfriend to illustrate it. So thanks for the push, New Zealand!

Hopefully you now realize you have someone in China who is willing to help you out, point you in the right direction. That way, in theory, bands can start seeing China as a real place to tour.

So, thank you so much for all your support, being friendly and making us feel really welcome. Please shoot us an email anytime to wearepairs[at]hotmail[dot]com, for any reason. We will definitely reply.

Cheers!
love always,
Xiao Zhong and F

The band will now be playing The Crown Hotel, 179 Rattray Street,

Support from this show comes from Heka and Opposite Sex. Entry is koha… so dig deep because they’ve come all the way from Shanghai…
